Triple Standards Jazz

Biography

Triple Standards formed midway through 2017 after Rose and Nicole decided to expand their duo. Rose and Nicole had been playing together for a number of years as ‘double standards’ so of course, adding one more makes it triple. Triple Standards play a mix of vocal jazz ‘standards’ primarily from the 30’s to the 50’s, from foot tapping swing, to blues, to ballads.  All the band members have a passion for jazz music, its’ challenges, its’ freedom and its’ swing. The band has played many engagements throughout 2017/18 including charity and corporate events, as well as the 2018 Port Fairy Jazz festival. All members are local to Portland, Victoria.

Band Members

Vocals - Nicole Evans

Nicole’s love of music began as a young girl, participating in school musicals, including a lead role in the ‘Music Man’ in her final year. Nicole developed an interest in Irish music and joined a group of local musicians, playing regularly at festivals, hotels, private functions and events for many years all over South West Victoria. The group developed a love of Jazz and Nicole modelled her singing on the vocal stylings of  such greats as Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole and Doris Day. Nicole’s voice is rooted in the stage show stylings she loved when she was a child. She has the natural ability to take the audience on a journey with her voice, describing perfectly the emotion and passion of music.

Guitar/Vocals/Sax - Rosie Collins

Rosie grew up in a musical family, joining the local pipe band at 6. Her primary school years saw a growing passion for music, learning percussion, singing, guitar and recorder. In high school, the recorder was upgraded to alto sax and then Charlie Parker lit the spark for Jazz. Rosie extended her musical education by attending VCA summer camps where she was able to hone her skills with other exceptional musicians. Rosie teaches music for a living and has played in band continuously since leaving school. She is a true multi-instrumentalist, but has chosen guitar as her foil for Jazz – this allows her to nourish her other passion – vocals. Rose is the heart of the triple standards project bringing hip guitar stylings and complementary vocals to the mix.

Bass - Paul Arkell

Paul has been playing music for over 40 years. Starting in the local brass band on trumpet (cornet), then moving to saxophone, then electric bass. A passion for jazz slowly developed over his musical career and the move to double bass was inevitable. Paul’s innate swing drives our drummerless trio with a foot tapping pulse … a fantastic base on which to create musical magic.
